JSPS Core-to-Core/Leverhulme Trust 4th Joint Workshop, St. Andrews 2016, “Organic Electronics of Highly-Correlated Molecular Systems”, was held at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland on 10-12th Apr. 2016. This workshop is the fourth annual meeting of this core-to-core program, which is co-organized by Leverhulme Trust, following the meetings in London (2013), Otaru (2014), Moscow (2015). This time, a UK core member, Professor Woollins, organized the conference place and program, and more than 50 people attended this workshop.

In the beginning of this workshop, Professor Woollins had an opening remark, and then 25 talks were given by core members, their young researchers and students for two days. Russian groups talked about syntheses and fundamental physical properties of thiazyl radicals, porphyrazines, and organic radical coordination compounds, and Canadian members gave some topics on syntheses of novel thiazyl radicals and their applications to organic devices, while UK members gave talks on syntheses and physical properties of organic chalocogenide materials. Japanese groups reported highly-correlated organic electronics related topics. Especially, it was impressive that Professor Rawson talked about thiazyl radicals and their metal complexes toward applications to organic solar cells and NLO, and Professor Sandrine showed spin properties of organic thin films, which is a collaborative work with Nagoya University. Furthermore, professors in Department of Physics, the University of St. Andrews, gave some presentations on device properties of organic semiconducting and EL materials. Actually, this workshops covered various topics from fundamental to applications. In coffee break, core members, and their young researchers and students, which have already met, enjoyed talking their research and more each other. This means that this exchange program is going well.

In the lunch time, 18 poster presentations were given, and Dr. Wu (Nagoya University) received the 1st Prize for Poster Presentation award, and Mr. Pal (University of St. Andrews) received the 2nd Prize from Professor Woollins in the closing remarks. Then, the banquet was held in the Vine Leaf Restaurant close to the University, and we enjoyed delicious foods with pleasant talks. The next annual workshop of this program will be held in Novosibirsk on Sept. 2016, which is organized by Professor Zibarev.

During this workshop, it was very windy and cold in St. Andrews. Japanese members were surprised at this weather since spring has come in Japan. A group photograph was taken in the backyard of Lower and Upper Halls, the University of St. Andrews before lunch of the first day.
