JSPS Core-to-Core/Leverhulme Trust Joint Workshop, Otaru 2014, “Organic Electronics of Highly-Correlated Molecular Systems”, was held at Grand Park Otaru in Otaru, Hokkaido on 24-26th Oct. 2014. This workshop is the second annual meeting of this core-to-core program, which is co-organized by Leverhulme Trust, following the first core-to-core kick-off meeting held in London last year. This time, most of core-members and their young researchers and students, up to 62 people, attended this meeting and enjoyed scientific talks and discussions in a hotel conference room from morning till night for two days.

In the beginning of this conference (Day 1), Prof. Awaga had opening remarks, and then 19 talks, 10 young researcher’s talk, and 15 poster presentations were given. Russian and Canadian groups talked about syntheses and fundamental physical properties of thiazyl radicals, while UK groups talk syntheses and physical properties of dithiolene metal complexes and organic polymers, and their thin-films fabrication and applications to electronic devices. Japanese groups reported various research topics such as supramolecular materials, carbon dioxide capturing of MOFs, physical properties and interfacial sciences of highly-correlated organic radicals, and organic spin/electronics.

In the afternoon of Day 1, young researchers’ talks and poster presentations were done, and the committee consisting of mainly core-members selected three best presentation awards (Lorena Giancarlo Soriano (Hokkaido Univ.), Hsiang-Han Tseng (Imperial Collage London), Zhang Zhongyue (Nagoya Univ.)) and two best poster awards (Chihiro Nanjo (Nagoya Univ.), Rosinda Fuentes (Univ. of Edinburgh) among them, respectively. At closing remarks of Day 2, Prof. Woollins (Univ. of St Andrews), who is a co-organizer of this meeting, gave them both a certificate of commendation and a prize.

On Day 3, international attendees mainly discussed their future collaboration, and then after they promised their own exchange in research and stay, they went back to each home. A group photo was taken and a core-member meeting was done in the lunch time of Day 2. Finally, it is proposed that this kind of annual core-to-core meeting in Moscow, Russia will be organized by Prof. Zibarev (Russian Academy of Sciences) on November of next year. Although early autumn in Hokkaido passed like deeply red and yellow leaves, and we felt just a little bit cold especially on Day 1, all days were fine and the conference was safely finished.
